RYP Community Development: Equity Series – NCBI Training on Privilege
July 27, 2017 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
$5Rochester Young Professionals, RocCity Coalition, and NextGen are partnering to offer an Equity Series to empower the future leaders of our city with training events to help create a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous Rochester.
The Equity Series leverages several of Rochester’s many organizations engaged in the fight to reduce poverty, combat discrimination, and provide opportunity for all. Each of the events in the Series will provide a framework for participants to reflect, interact with others, and develop tools to create positive impact in our community.
Each event will include light refreshments and time for networking with your fellow YP’s.
Join for our second event in the series: PRIVILEGE: Taking out the Sting…Taking in the Reality, a training by NCBI. This is the first of two sessions to be facilitated by NCBI.
The event is free, but please take a moment to RSVP here: http://rypequityncbiprivilege.app.rsvpify.com/
PRIVILEGE and entitlement are trigger words – especially for white people on matters of race. Yet the dynamics surrounding privilege are fluid and play out across all the identities we carry. Our economic and social systems are structured to perpetuate the status quo, but the status quo is flawed…whether in government, religion, environmental concerns or in business.
Objectives:
Objectives during our first session are twofold:
1. to provide a broad introduction to privilege and its expression in everyday settings
2. to explore the personal impact of privilege in various aspects of our lives, including the workplace.
Our program is hosted by The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) of Rochester, New York, Inc., a nonprofit leadership development organization whose goal is to eliminate prejudice and the mistreatment of any person or group wherever it occurs.
Facilitators:
Our facilitators include Steven Jarose, Director of NCBI Rochester for the past 16 years and constituency leader for the international LGBTQ caucus, and Sady Fischer, NCBI facilitator, a Gay Alliance Board Member, member of Latinas Unidas, and mentor/trainer in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
We look forward to being with you, and leave you with one question to ponder: “When you hear the word privilege, what comes up for you?”
This facility is accessible for people of all abilities.
Event cost is free, but a $5 donation at the door is suggested.
