A few months ago, I decided that I wanted to start covering long distances on my bike. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any family or friends that were ready to take that leap.
Social media, especially Facebook, opens up a world of possibilities to find new opportunities. I oftentimes found myself sifting through various Facebook events, and marking myself as “interested” but never taking the plunge and actually attending.
Going out of my comfort zone, I opted into attending an event with a group of Rochester cyclists. I was running late, and getting increasingly nervous by the minute. I didn’t know anyone in the group, and the last thing I wanted to do was hold them up or miss the event completely.
“Well, here goes nothing,” I thought as I began introducing myself and meeting the group of cyclists that I would be spending the next three hours with.
After the group completed the 30-mile bike ride, I felt incredibly accomplished. I had not only gained miles on my bike ride, but I had also gained new friends and discovered an alternative way to explore Rochester.
I was hooked.
Being a young professional in a city with what seems like unlimited possibilities is an opportunity to experience adventure every day. It takes some guts as well as an avenue to take those leaps. Rochester Young Professionals opens that door with the many events and opportunities held throughout the year. I encourage you to take a risk and opt into attending the next Facebook event that crosses your path and sparks your interest.
Perhaps you are interested in volunteering at an event that you have no one to go with, or trying a new outdoor recreation activity that you never thought you’d have the chance to try.
Maybe there’s a networking event that will allow you to build both personal and professional relationships. RYP opens the door by providing opportunities that you may have never considered.
Are you taking advantage of all Rochester has to offer?
