Rochester Young Professionals and RocCity Coalition are partnering to offer an Equity Series to empower the future leaders of our city with training events to help create a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous Rochester.

The Equity Series leverages Rochester’s many organizations engaged in the fight to reduce poverty, combat discrimination, and provide opportunity for all. Each of the events in the Series will provide a framework for participants to reflect, interact with others, and develop tools to create positive impact in our community.

Please join us for our next event in the series, an introduction to American sign Language at the Rochester Brainery!

Rochester, NY has the highest Deaf population in the world. It’s time to learn the language that will bring us all closer together; so get ready to learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) through the fun of socialization! You’ll leave with a new appreciation for the language as well as resources to help you continue to grow as a signer. Participants will focus on mastering the basics of finger spelling, facial grammar, vocabulary and conversational phrases necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL. This class will also take a look into the rich world of Deaf culture and teach culturally appropriate ways to interact with Deaf people.

Class location: This class will take place at Rochester Brainery, 176 Anderson Ave, F109 Rochester NY 14607. There is a parking lot and an accessible entrance right next to the building. It is on your left side just down from the turn from Goodman to Anderson Ave.

About the teacher:
Sarah Cincotta has been fluent in ASL ever since her early twenties. Since then she has finished up her degree at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and has been working in the community for many years as an American Sign Language interpreter. It is Sarah’s goal for every hearing person in Rochester to know American Sign Language and know where to go to continue if they please.
